In addition to farm business consulting, Richard and his wife Davina, have been dairy farming in their own right for the past 15 years. During this time Richard also spent 5 years as the CEO of Hopkins Farming Group, a large-scale dairy farming business based in the Manawatu. From a diverse background ranging from family business to corporate structures and being an owner operator to running large teams, he has a track record of success and offers clients a wide skillset that is firmly based on practical experience.
This practical experience is backed up with a focus on further learning. He has an undergraduate degree from Lincoln University, an MBA from the Melbourne Business School, has completed both the Fonterra and DairyNZ Rural Governance Development Programs. He is a Certified Nutrient Management Advisor and is accredited with the DairyNZ Body Condition Score Assessor programme.
While he has strong belief in the value traditionally provided by farm consultants in supporting clients with seasonal tactical decision making to optimise profit, his desire is to extend this to a ‘whole of business approach’. He sees significant value for clients having greater clarity around their purpose, strategy, financial goals, people and business planning processes. The end result seeing farm owners being in control (and feeling more in control) of successful businesses that are sustainable and meeting their aspirations.
